The Sabot slug is designed to be used in a rifled shotgun barrel, and even though it will shoot out of a smooth bore shotgun, there is no rifling effect so there are accuracy issues as the longer ranges. Well, as you might imagine for a single slug shotgun projectile wrapped in a plastic wad they are quite recognizable. While they come in various designs as there are many manufacturers, the slug itself a lot of the time typically takes on the same aerodynamically designed bullet shape.
The slug will be wrapped in a plastic wall that engages the rifling when fired. This wall which gets the slug spinning as it is fired, separates when they exit the barrel. You may wonder why manufacturers go to so much trouble to make a slug that is designed to replicate a bullet. As a shotgun is basically a bullet fired from a shotgun, and a Sabot round is essentially a rifled bullet, it may come as no surprise to learn a Sabot round is primarily used in game hunting.
Conceivably you could use them for target practice, and fun recreational shooting, but they are designed for taking down deer, or other similar sized animals up to yards. You might use it for defense if you have a farm, or wide open space to defend though. Although a good range for Sabot slugs might be up to yards, at yards you should be able to group within a few inches with a properly zeroed scope.
Can I cut the barrel in order to have no choke? It would make a great gun for ruffed grouse and rabbits. Hi Jim. Sorry for the slow reply. But at least in southeast Texas, most shots at deer are at longer distances. At yards, the scope and rifled barrel and sabots would shoot more accurately than a normal rifled slug from a smooth bore.
When I switched to Federal rifled slugs they were all over the target. Lesson: you are right, find the ammo your particular gun shoots best. I have a combo gun — over a 12ga.
It has nice sights, so I tried both regular slugs and sabot slugs to see if I could take advantage of the good sights. Regular slugs shot well. The sabot would shoot a few of the slugs to a tight group but some fliers, much farther out than you had. Conclusion was sabot are only for rifles barrels.
Might work in a rifled choke, too. Have not tried that. Hi, I just read your post on shotgun slugs. Do you know of any company that manufactures an Is such a barrel simply not made? Thanks for your help. Here I am on the shotgun. Here is a close-up of two of the rounds on the target. Here they are. Original Chapters.
