For much of the running length, Donnie Darko focuses more on Donnie's relationships with his sisters, parents, and girlfriend than on the science fiction aspects. This is meant to humanize a non-traditional protagonist and make him more "accessible" to viewers.

It also allows the climax to have an emotional component in addition to explaining the storyline's assorted, convoluted weirdness. Donnie Darko has a slow, methodical pace that allows the narrative to breathe; unfortunately, there are times when Kelly falls prey to the easy trap of self-indulgence. Selective edits would have made Donnie Darko tighter and more gripping, and, as a result, a better motion picture.

Again, I was blessed even with all of the younger actors in the film. They all came out of Harvard Westlake and these great acting high schools where they have these amazing drama teachers. The younger ones live in the Oakwood Condominiums, these condominiums over in Burbank, and they live there and they learn their craft. Talk to me a little bit about where Donnie Darko comes from emotionally and intellectually for you, and what it meant to you as a writer before it got made, as well as now, looking back, what it means.

I tell people I wrote this script in about a month. I wrote it in about 28 days; the length of the tangent universe in the movie. It was a script 23 years in the making, and it was my first screenplay, in fact. Working on it almost held up me getting my film degree.

But my parents had invested a lot of money in my college education! But really it was a combination of fear and many years of preparation and Donnie Darko is what emerged. But this re-release it felt like a moment of opportunity, while I was writing something else, to do the restoration on Donnie Darko because it felt like a good time to get it back into theaters.

You know, there is an opportunity to do something new in that universe. But again, I would never want to pursue something unless it was really worthy of that pursuit. Do you see the cast ever? Making a film is sort of like being in a war together. Do you see Jake or Maggie or Jenna, for instance, or any of the other cast members, and what is that like? Does it remind you of that of moment in time, or is it something else? If anything, it just makes me wish I could see them more often. We have to navigate that for survival and for happiness.

Farmer's intentions to get The Destructors banned. Behind this transition there is a short new scene where Donnie sits down next to Gretchen and she asks him why he has blood on his neck. Their opinions are wildly different, and they joke about getting divorced.

The seminar now goes on longer, with extra scenes before Donnie steps up to the mic. This scene is overlaid with chapter 4 from the book, the Artifact of the Living. His dad tells him that no matter how crazy he thinks he is, he should always say what's on his mind.

Gretchen and Donnie argue in the class about the meaning of them. Donnie doesn't see the point of crying over a dead rabbit, Gretchen tells Donnie he missed the point, and Karen Pomeroy tells the class that the Deus Ex Machina is what saved the rabbits.

Thumbing through the channels I stopped just as Donnie Darko was beginning. I thought the title was weird, and readied my thumb on the remote channel selector I couldn't stop watching! I've never seen a movie like this.

The movie has a beautiful aspect especially the end. But somehow the control fades in the closing scenes, and our hands, which have been so full, close on emptiness. But it was fun trying to land it.
